The core concept of a PhD project is learning by doing. But also learning from those more experienced in your group. And also learning theoretical knowledge in courses or postgraduate schools. Through all this, you develop in your own scientific area, where eventually you ought to become an expert by the end of your PhD.
Yet, this is not all a PhD is about.
At IIT we help you putting your growing research expertise into a professional and societal perspective.
Evolving into a responsible scientist means developing skills in areas such as science communication, research data, management of intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and the impact that technology may have on society. With us, you can equip with a spectrum of such skills, taking advantage of a number of training events (short courses, workshops) dedicated to transferable skills.
But you can also complement the theoretical knowledge with a practical experience, e.g. through our placement program. There, students are part-time seconded to research support offices (e.g., communication, tech transfer), where they gain hands-on experience in e.g. how to prepare interviews or podcasts, or to run patent searches and understand the freedom to operate.
In short, a PhD at IIT is excellent science. And a lot more to it.
